PORSCHES 2 OXFORD OPENS PRE-REGISTRATION FOR 2010 EVENT

Nation’s premier Porsche cruise-in anticipating over 500 German sports cars on July 30-31 weekend in rural college town

Oxford, OH, April 05, 2010 –(PR.com)– Anticipating over 500 German sports cars, Porsches 2 Oxford organizers opened pre-registration for the 6th annual event on April 5, 2010. Last year the early response was so overwhelming, Porsche enthusiasts crashed the event web site minutes after pre-registration opened.  Beefed up and ready for an even larger turnout, the nation’s premier Porsche cruise-in entertains attendees from over 20 states and Canada. Hosted by the Mid-Ohio Region Porsche Club of America, P2O takes place on July 30-31, 2010, and is free to the public.

“Last year was incredible on many levels,” said P2O Media and Publicity Director Chris Rieman. “We set a new attendance record for our fifth anniversary event in spite of weather conditions that were nearly apocalyptic.  But that didn’t stop attendees or dampen their spirits even when the wind and rain were dampening the Oxford streets. That’s a testament to just how important this event is to the national Porsche landscape.”

Dubbed “a casual Porsche party”, P2O organizers host attendees in the rural college town of uptown Oxford, Ohio. Located 30 miles north of Cincinnati along the Ohio-Indiana border, event activities expand this year to include an outdoor food and beer garden from 6-9PM Friday July 30th to welcome and engage arriving guests, while the signature car show takes place all day Saturday with an awards ceremony to follow around 4pm. A Sunday road rally along the countryside wraps up the weekend.

“Our offseason goal was to add more activities so guests can make a long weekend out of their travels,” Rieman said. “More opportunities to interact with guests, bring in exciting new vendors, and incorporate the uptown Oxford businesses seemed like a natural response on our part that benefits the entire community.”

Although the casual fun alongside expensive German sports cars headlines the event, P2O brings Porsche enthusiasts together to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The event’s underlying charity for the past three years, the ACS has a special connection that organizers draw inspiration from.

“MaryLynn Roe co-founded the event in Michigan in 2003 and saw the move to Oxford in 2005, but her courageous battle with cancer was her greatest legacy,” Rieman said. “She passed away from cancer in 2006 but her spirit and vision remain a central rallying point for this event. The ACS is a perfect fit for us.”

Organizers started a new tradition in 2009 to do just that, selling prime parking spots for $100 each to benefit the local chapter of the ACS. All 40 spaces were sold in the first three days of registration. Five dollars from general registrations also benefit the charity while 50/50 drawings throughout the afternoon complete the fundraising. Organizers have expanded MaryLynn’s Row parking to 75 spaces in 2010 to accommodate the demand.

“We raised $10,000 last year and every penny came directly from the attendees,” Rieman said. “This is not an event where organizers ask sponsors to write large checks from an out-of-state office.  The giving is personal and profound and done in a way that highlights the very best of intentions by our guests. We plan to raise even more money for ACS in 2010.”

Porsches 2 Oxford began as Porsches 2 Pinckney (MI) in 2003 as 85 cars took part in the first-year event. The event moved to Oxford in 2005 and entertained a modest 140 cars. The attendees increased to 225 cars in 2006 and 255 cars in 2007. A then-record 396 Porsches made their way to Oxford on July 26, 2008 for the fourth annual event. RAIN DAMPENS STREETS BUT NOT SPIRIT FOR RECORD 409 PORSCHES

Fifth Annual Porsches 2 Oxford Breaks Attendance Record and Raises $10,000 for the American Cancer Society

Thunderstorms and scattered rain washed the Oxford streets clean for much of the morning and afternoon, but the sun came out late in the day on Saturday July 25th to brighten the mood. Despite the unfavorable forecasts and less than ideal weather, a record 409 Porsches from 19 states and Canada said “bring it on” and flooded uptown Oxford with a deluge of their own.  With portions of revenue from registrations, reserved parking in MaryLynn’s Row, and raffle ticket sales, Porsches 2 Oxford attendees raised $10,000 for the American Cancer Society — another record by nearly five-fold. The can-do willingness to roll with the day’s punches underlined the theme once again for the nation’s most anticipated casual Porsche party.

“It’s difficult to encapsulate the thanks organizers have for the patience and understanding of all 409 attendees,” said P2O Director of Media & Publicity Chris Rieman. “In a perfect world these things don’t happen.  For 12 months every volunteer dedicated themselves to the event knowing weather could make a lot of hard work go un-rewarded. Attendees refused to let that happen however and shined the brightest when the skies were darkest.”

Thunderstorms awakened Porsche fans about 4:15am and precipitation remained until shortly after noon. Porsche fans then had a chance to clean cars for good and walk the streets lined with cars from a 1955 356-Pre A to a 2009 Cayman S.  Also making appearances were an original Porsche tractor and a pair of Beck 904 and 550 Spyder reproductions on personal display from legendary craftsmen Chuck and Randy Beck of Atlanta, GA.  Cincinnati ABC affiliate WCPO-TV Channel  9 provided coverage for the tri-state while a representative from Excellence Magazine handled photography. Top-50 awards — venerable P2O Bricks — and a $10,000 check to the ACS preceded a drive to Hueston Woods State Park to round out the dry portion of the festivities. Local and national sponsors offered a variety wares and tech sessions to keep every owner happy. The Mid-Ohio Region Porsche Club of America served as event host.

“A dozen organizers were on the streets at 4am deciding how best to handle the pending storms,” said P2O Chairperson Brice Kadel. “After a lot of radar-watching, we knew organizers may be forced off the scripted page today. Ultimate success would depend on whether attendees would grant us the latitude to do just that without a lot of fuss. Even my best-case scenario never expected such graciousness and accommodation.  The people remain the most impressive part of this event.”

The fifth anniversary event, organizers pre-registered 448 cars and played host to 409.  The weather kept around 100 Porsches from attending due to no-shows and weaker day-of registrations, however Porsches on display of all vintages and models eclipsed last year’s record of 396 cars under less threatening skies.  Oxford Visitors & Convention Bureau Executive Director Diana Durr and her staff spent months of planning to ensure P2O was a signature event for the city.

“Porsches 2 Oxford is a privilege to be involved with,” Durr said. “Today was probably the most challenging in five years, but also the most gratifying. The OVCB couldn’t ask for a nicer collection of people to run this event or visit the city of Oxford as our personal guest. My team including Barb Rice, Christie Schlichter, and numerous volunteers want to thank everyone for such a positive attitude each and every year.”

“P2O remains first and foremost an event about people,” Rieman said. “Porsches merely provide the excuse to get together and have a great time.  Perhaps most satisfying is watching the attendees take ownership of the last Saturday in July. They genuinely care about one another and many tell us if they can only make one event all summer, P2O takes precedence. I don’t see how anyone can argue that point given the incredible turnout today in what were, at times, incredible weather conditions.”

Fastest-growing Porsche event in the country finds its niche in rural border town

A record 390 Porsches made their way to Oxford, Ohio on July 26, 2008 for the fourth annual Porsches 2 Oxford event. The college town along the Ohio-Indiana border drew cars from 17 states and Canada and increased attendance by 54% over last year’s turnout of 254 cars. The uptown streets were closed off all day and entertained thousands of onlookers enjoying the expensive German sports cars.

“It’s a remarkable turnout,” said P2O Publicity Director Chris Rieman. “We set a new benchmark last year and had concerns that $4.00 gas and a sluggish economy would stand in our way like it has many other automotive events this year. To see an increase of nearly 140 cars is most satisfying and tells us P2O is a summer event attendees can’t miss.”

Porsches 2 Oxford relocated from Pinckney, MI, in 2005 and entertained 140 cars in the first year. Attendance has increased substantially ever since, growing to 225 cars in 2006 and 254 last year. With 417 paid registrations in 2008, organizers are setting their sights on over 500 cars next summer.

“Getting 500 cars is a big number,” Rieman admitted. “Outside of the Porsche Parade which is sponsored by the Porsche Club of America national office, we’d like to think P2O is the largest, most attractive, and well-organized regional event on the calendar. Our attendance and geographic reach continues to grow and that’s a true testament to the enthusiasm and spirit the attendees bring to this event.”

That enthusiasm showed in the early morning hours on Saturday as 75 cars lined the streets by 6:15am in what has become a P2O tradition. The local Elms Hotel was booked months in advance and three others were nearly full as hundreds of Porsche aficionados make a weekend out of it.

Billed as ‘a casual Porsche party’, P2O is the brainchild of Bill and Marylynn Roe. Frustrated with events elsewhere, they decided to start their own and develop a Porsche cruise-in that was unpretentious and directed at owners normally too intimidated to get involved. The event spent three years in Pinckney before needing a new home to broaden the appeal. The rural town of Oxford proved to be that perfect location with easy access to major geographic arteries. The brick-lined streets, endless eateries, and plethora of watering holes keep P2O quaint and personal.

Marylynn lost her battle with cancer in 2006 but saw the groundwork completed as the event took off.

“Marylynn’s fingerprints are all over this event,” Rieman said. “She wanted the attendees to be the focus as much as the cars and that’s exactly what happened. The social network created by P2O is a large one. People return to Oxford to see old friends and meet new ones as much as they do to enjoy the Porsches. Not many events can say that.”

Of the nearly 400 cars on display, there were high-mileage daily drivers, garage queens, and even a Porsche tractor. Other cars included a Carrera GT, 904 Carrera GTS, and 1973 911 Carrera RS. The event awards unique brick trophies to the Top-35 vote-getters, while thousands in door prizes, giveaways, and charitable giving to the American Cancer Society round out the afternoon. Two sponsorship tiers provide the backbone, with premier support coming from Griot’s Garage, Beechmont Porsche, and Autobahn Extremist.

“You’ll see a little bit of everything here,” Rieman stated. “We’ve had a 959 in the past and a gentleman with a pair of 944s clocking 550,000 miles between the two. That’s what makes P2O so special. Because attendees can park wherever they like, the eclectic mix makes for great conversation pieces between owners.”

SMALL-TOWN OXFORD BLOSSOMING INTO BIG-TIME HOST

Porsches 2 Oxford 2008 has the right mix of casual hospitality and rural comfort

It is 6:15am Saturday morning in the rural hinterlands along the Ohio-Indiana border, the kind of place where endless rows of corn and two-lane switchbacks provide the only way in or out.  Somewhere in between the coming and going is Oxford, a small college town straight out of central casting where brick-lined streets and quaint storefronts play host to higher education of a different sort every last weekend of July.  Porsches 2 Oxford is about to begin and 75 cars are already parked and being detailed where Main and High Street converge, the first hearty soul removing his car from the parking garage across the street a half hour earlier.  It’s dark and it’s early.  It doesn’t matter.

By mid-afternoon, the number swells to 390 Porsches from 17 states and Canada and all the appropriate bases were covered — from a 275,000-mile 944 daily driver to an original 904 Carrera GTS.  Most remarkable is the 54% attendance increase over last year’s record turnout of 254 cars. While P2O bills itself as ‘a casual Porsche party’, there’s nothing casual about the growing national interest in this event.

The party started four years ago in Oxford but has roots in Pinckney, MI, where Porsche enthusiasts Bill and Marylynn Roe decided to organize their own event that focused on being less intimidating for owners looking to get involved.  A better location was needed however and the low-key, unpretentious party found a perfect fit just 35 miles northwest of Cincinnati where major arteries to other major cities gave the event broader appeal.  A proper infrastructure to support 15,000 Miami University students meant the town had no shortage of storefronts to keep attendees hydrated and fed.  At show center exists a large plaza with green space and a bandshell to serve as basecamp for registrations, music, and announcements throughout the day. It was the perfect choice for organizers because much of the overhead to run a show was already in place. The relocated event just needed a solid sales pitch.

Attendance debuted with 140 cars in Oxford’s first year, 225 in 2006, and 254 last year.  With 417 paid registrations in 2008, organizers are gunning for well over 500 cars next year.   It’s hard not to think of the final sequence in Field of Dreams and begin drawing comparisons.  In both cases, parades of cars travel through the rural corn to a place where deliverance intersects the divine.  Only in this case, the voices you hear are your own compelling impressions instead of ghosts or aberrations.

“I wish I could say it was one or two things, but there are many pieces fitting perfectly together – some by design and some by a lot of good fortune,” explained Co-Chairperson Brice Kadel on P2O’s meteoric rise.  “We place an emphasis on treating everyone like they are the most important person at the show and open a dialogue with attendees as soon as registration opens in March. We just have to do it 400 or 500 times now and take a relentless approach to communicating that message affectively. “   Back in 2005 however, there were no guarantees.

“Looking back, the first year was probably the most important because we had nothing to sell but Bill and Marylynn’s idea and undocumented promises,” Kadel added.  “Pinckney was 200 miles away and that meant we were essentially starting over, so the first event in Oxford needed primary support from a new attendance base.  When attendance jumped dramatically to 225 cars in year two, we looked at each other and said, ‘okay, we’re definitely on to something.’”

The early risers fetching prime parking spots on Saturday morning has turned into a P2O tradition. Caravans from outside the region roll in soon thereafter.  “On so many levels the glory belongs to the participants,” Kadel said.  “Without their enthusiasm, even great ideas lose traction.”

Judy Ghormley and her 18-yr old son Tom made the 1,020-mile round trip from Marietta, Georgia in a 1987 911 Factory Turbo Look.  Judy admitted she’s not an event regular in the Porsche community and doesn’t have the background to cite Porsche facts and figures, but loves her 89,000-mile car just the same after six years of ownership. It was their first P2O and won’t be the last.

“I had been concerned that I didn’t know anyone and my Porsche was not good enough to display in an event such as this,” she said. “I was concerned that I wouldn’t fit in. I left having learned quite a bit about my car and feeling like I was a welcomed part of the group.  I made friends as a result of the experience. I enjoyed the intimacy the small town had to offer but I never imagined I would literally see a ‘big city’ display of the millions of dollars worth of high-end cars lined through the streets.”

As attendance increases, more owners choose to make a weekend out of it. The local Elms Hotel sells out months in advance while three others are nearly booked.  A Friday night gathering at one of the local eateries starts the weekend fun and the smiles continue through Sunday afternoon when a road rally through the backcountry caps off the event.

Absorbing nearly 400 Porsches in one location is both intoxicating and overwhelming.  Every model is represented, from stock to highly modified, from garage queen to daily driver.  Walk a few paces and spot a 1973 911 Carrera RS. Round a corner and enjoy a supercharged 928. Everyone parks where they like, making each turn of the head a new surprise. As PCA National President Prescott Kelly noted later in the day, the only drawback is sore feet.

Attendees vote for their 10 favorite cars and the votes get tallied to determine the Top-35 Porsches that receive unique brick trophies.  Thousands in door prizes and giveaways throughout the day return much of the revenue stream back to those who paid $20 to display their car. All attendees go home with a t-shirt, commemorative poster, and goodie bag full of items.  Sponsorship consists of two tiers, with Beechmont Porsche, Griot’s Garage, and Autobahn Extremist providing premier support. A 50/50 raffle benefits the American Cancer Society on behalf of Marylynn, who co-founded the event with Bill and lost her battle with cancer in 2006. The Mid-Ohio Region PCA serves as event host.

“Marylynn is the reason for all of this,” Kadel insisted. “She wanted an event specifically for people too intimidated to consider attending one.   The cars are amazing, but the people are what make this event special.  Despite the increasing attendance, we’ve worked extremely hard to ensure no one feels second class or like a name on a computer spreadsheet. That’s all Marylynn and I can only hope she’s nodding with approval as she looks down on the progress we’ve made.”

The city of Oxford definitely approves. Forecasted economic impact of this year’s event will approach $1 million and the national publicity the city receives doesn’t hurt either, according to Diana Durr, Executive Director of the Oxford Visitors and Convention Bureau and lead P2O coordinator for the city.

“The event promotes Oxford exceedingly well,” Durr said. “In the first year, it was a word-of-mouth event, but this year the Cincinnati-based newspaper and television stations all featured Porsches 2 Oxford in their coverage — prominently I might add.  Everyone involved with P2O still reaches out personally to attract an audience but the regional and national reputation of the event has begun to turn its own wheels.  It also legitimizes the event and lends an added layer of credibility.”

As Saturday’s cruise-in wrapped up, the winning cars were parked along Main Street as proud owners displayed their bricks and waited for a pending victory lap though nearby Hueston Woods State Park where 100 other attendees would follow.  The threatening rain held off all day, but the skies finally opened up, forcing many 356 owners to jump out and raise the roof.  But the roof had already been raised on an event seemingly sheltered from $4.00 gas and sluggish economic times.  As countless Porsche engines fired up and the police escort pulled away, nothing could dampen another record-setting year for an event with boundless momentum in the rural cornfields of middle America.

‘Is this heaven?’ someone asked as they walked past another row of prized metal.  No, it’s Oxford – the kind of place where two-lane country roads and a good excuse are all that separates owner from enchantment.  There’s no promise the corn will talk to you, but the cars, the people, and the experience certainly will.

The quaint college town near the Ohio/Indiana border expecting nearly 300 German sports cars at one of nation’s fastest-growing Porsche events

Started in 2003 as Porsches 2 Pinckney, the event moved to Oxford, OH, in 2005 and changed names to reflect the new location. Celebrated as a casual get-together of car owners and the community, P2O attracted 140 cars from eight states and Canada last year. While the event routinely brings several regional and national concours-winning vehicles, Porsches of all conditions and mileage are encouraged to participate.
